Nalbinding (pronounced nawl-bihn-ding) is an ancient fiber art that predates knitting & crochet. Practiced primarily in Scandinavia and the Southern Mediterranean, this fiber art has experienced a resurgance in interest, especially amongst reenactors and those with an historical interest. Ideally suited for thick, durable hats, mittens and socks; it will not run or unravel if cut or holed. Many items crafted using nalbinding are fulled after completion creating a thick, warm fabric well suited to those working outdoors or in a rugged environment.
This beautiful cowl is made with a traditional nalbinding technique. If you’ve made the Oslo Hat, this cowl is actually done with a different stitch, Korgen or Mammen stitch. You may easily adjust the circumference and width of this versatile cowl. This class is open to both beginner nalbinders and those who got addicted in the hat class! The cowl is made with a chain start instead of a rosette, so you’ll learn a new technique there too!
