Snowbird top down sweater

Snowbird top down sweater in Rowan Kid Classic

Want to knit a sweater but find patterns intimidating? Sometimes knitting feels like a visit to a foreign land where the natives speak another language. Let us be your guide as we walk you through the process of reading patterns and knitting a a swatch for gauge. Along the way, you will learn how to set up your seamless sweater, whether it’s knit from the top down or the bottom up, finishing techniques for a sweater you will be proud to wear, and tips to size a pattern to fit your shape.

Welted Fingerless Gloves in Shibui Baby Alpaca

Welted Fingerless Gloves in Shibui Baby Alpaca

Mittens and fingerless gloves are perfect knitting for the approaching holiday season. They are quick to knit. The choice of yarn makes for a distinctive and unique gift – my personal favorite for teachers. Kiko has chosen two Churchmouse designs for this class - Colorwork Cuffs & Mittens and Welted Fingerless Glove. All students will learn to knit in the round on double pointed needles. Those selecting the Colorwork Cuffs & Mittens pattern will learn to follow a color chart.

Pair this class with Hickory’s early October workshop Knitting in (Small) Circles to practice the techniques covered!

Steeking Workshop (starting Nov 24)

Rowan_Izmir 2_0

Want to steek this “Izmir” Cardigan from Rowan Magazine 54?

Two 2-hour classes; $40 + tax & supplies

Steeking is a short cut (literally) for making large projects like sweaters.  The entire piece is first knitted in the round without interruptions or openings.  After the tube is completed, you cut into the fabric for armholes, necklines, and front openings.  Sleeves are then attached.

Intrigued?  This workshop aims to make this technique less intimidating.   Susan will also show you how to modify back-and-forth Fair Isle patterns for steeking. Bring a Fair Isle pattern of your choice and prepare to be amazed!!

You’ll need to bring to class wool or wool blend in sport or light worsted weight in a few contrasting colors with appropriately sized DPNs or circular needles.  We’re always happy to help you select yarn for a project (such as the “Izmir” cardigan on the right) that’s best suited for steeking.
