Snowbird top down sweater

Want to knit a sweater but find patterns intimidating? Sometimes knitting feels like a visit to a foreign land where the natives speak another language. Let us be your guide as we walk you through the process of reading patterns and knitting a a swatch for gauge. Along the way, you will learn how to set up your seamless sweater, whether it’s knit from the top down or the bottom up, finishing techniques for a sweater you will be proud to wear, and tips to size a pattern to fit your shape.

Bump Yarn Rug Weaving (on Nov 5)

One 3-hour class; $30 + tax & supplies

Bug Yarn Rug Weaving

Weave a rug with Bump yarn! This super bulky yarn with alpaca spun around a cotton core from Autumn Mist Alpaca Farm and Fiber Mill is amazing.  The texture is deliciously soft and thick.  It comes in 100 yard bumps, enough to knit, crochet, or weave a baby soft alpaca rug!

Using a warp of strong, thin cotton (provided for the class) and weft of Bump yarn results in a colorful, soft rug. One bag of Bump yarn makes a runner about 2′ x 6′ or several smaller rugs. Bump yarn is available in different colors and results in built-in stripes.

Autumn Mist Superbulky Alpaca

In this single-session class we’ll warp the loom, start weaving, discuss shuttle options, cover joining ends, and fringe/edge choices. You’ll complete weaving the piece on your own.

Welted Fingerless Gloves in Shibui Baby Alpaca

Welted Fingerless Gloves in Shibui Baby Alpaca

Mittens and fingerless gloves are perfect knitting for the approaching holiday season. They are quick to knit. The choice of yarn makes for a distinctive and unique gift – my personal favorite for teachers. Kiko has chosen two Churchmouse designs for this class - Colorwork Cuffs & Mittens and Welted Fingerless Glove. All students will learn to knit in the round on double pointed needles. Those selecting the Colorwork Cuffs & Mittens pattern will learn to follow a color chart.

Pair this class with Hickory’s early October workshop Knitting in (Small) Circles to practice the techniques covered!

Learn to Knit Lace Scarf

Three 2-hour classes; $35 + tax & supplies (each session)

Sign up for one or both sessions; to skip to “B”, you should be comfortable working yarnovers and directional decreases, and reading charts.

Learn To Knit Lace Scarf 1024

Knitted lace patterns are mostly simple repetitions of increase and decrease stitches (yarnover/k2tog), easily mastered by knitters at any level – so if you can cast on and make a knit or purl stitch, you are ready for lace. Kiko has designed a lace primer that starts with single eyelets and gradually introduces more complex motifs. You will also find out how easy it can be to follow charts.

This fall, we are offering the course in 3 + 3 segments, so you have the option of taking just an intro taste with session A or continuing on for more involved designs in session B. A complete scarf can be made from either of the sessions (and of course with both) since the sampler set-up allows you to mix-n-match the components you wish to work with.

We recommend a smooth fingering weight yarn with wool content (450 yds or more) and a set of straight or circular needles in a size that gives you a relaxed but even stockinette stitch (usually around US4 depending on the yarn, however go up 1 size if in doubt). Scarf pattern is included with the class, and is a series of written and charted directions handed out at each meeting.
